Leadership
During a learning session this week, a question was asked about the methods you use to meet your company goals. Are you the type of leader that’s barking and circling people to get things done or are you the mother duck who confidently says “let’s go” and just expects people (ducklings) to follow by her example. Honestly, I want to follow a warm, encouraging, confident leader (duck) who forges ahead and ensures her ducklings are growing and protected. How can I be that leader in my home, at work, and in other areas of life? Good question.
When I think of a mother duck, she keeps her ducklings warm and safe. I picture them tucked under her but she doesn’t do everything for them. They are expected to follow and feed themselves (do their work-foraging- to survive). They are in community thus the relationships help them to do well. I’ve seen a mother duck go all out against a predator, very protective.
So, how does those attributes crossover to life? I want to consistently be there for people in any realm (home, work, etc). I want to have nurturing interactions that help people grow versus tearing them down and making them feel harassed (like a sheepdog would). An image of following God just popped in my head. He is there for us and loves us and only wants us to follow Him. My identity is in Him. I am made in His image.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28 NIV). A duckling knows it’s a duck. When I know that I am His, then I want to follow and love Him and others well. That is my purpose, wherever I’m at but it means interactions, intimacy, and following the Word and spending time in the Word and in fellowship.
Point: Follow good leaders, be a good leader. And Jesus was the best.
