Yes, “God hears our hearts not our words.” I often worry about the words I pray whether at a meal or in front of people. Have you ever been put on the spot to pray before a small group? Some people speak eloquently and connect with God in an out-loud prayer. I am not gifted in speaking out loud or on the spot. Many times, I get embarrassed easily when I speak before others in what is to be an intimate prayer. Conversing with God, to me, is a Holy and reverent and private conversation. Formal or unplanned out-loud prayers are not my forte.
Prayers can be approached in many ways though……..prayers can be formal and recited or they can be a heartfelt request. I am not dismissing the need to present our pleas before God whether formal or informal. Yes, present your needs and fears before God but in communion with God.
How do you position yourself when you pray? My best friend uses the morning light in her sunny front room and quiets her mind and opens her heart. She is present with Him and intimate in these moments. Per C. S. Lewis, “Prayer in the sense of requesting is not what matters. Prayer in the sense in lifting the mind and heart to God is what counts.” Be still and know that He is. Be present with Him in your heart and mind. He can do all things and you can trust Him.
