The Trolls World Tour movie had some wild hair, great music, and deep messages. One message was about being made wonderfully-different. Each troll group had a unique genre of music that defined or symbolized the group. Each group beat to a different drum, basically. Country had a sad and mournful beat or sound, rock was energetic and powerful, pop was lyrical and uplifting. There were other groups of trolls and music, as well. I appreciate many types of music depending on my mood or need. To me, all are signficant. One rock troll commented on the importance of difference, “If we all look the same, act the same, dress the same, how will anyone know we’re cool or something?” God made each of us “cool or something.” His plan was not for us to be the same, but to be uniquely wired and wonderfully-made.
Two troll queens, though, had plans for uniting the different groups, but in quite different ways. One queen (the rock queen Barb) wanted her culture to dominate and rule all the trolls. The trolls had to assimilate into her way of living or culture. The other queen (pop queen Poppy) wanted to positively influence people to her way of thinking and her view of harmony. She commented that “We’re all trolls! Differences don’t matter.” But, she wasn’t listening to anyone or appreciating difference. No one was listening or appreciating difference. Per King Quincy of the funky trolls, “Denying our differences is denying the truth of who we are.”
The need to listen and appreciate difference was finally recognized and verbalized by Poppy, “You have to be able to listen to other voices, even when they don’t agree with you. They make us stronger, more creative, more inspired.” Each group learned to appreciate and respect one another. In the end, they all were able to come together and play their different genre in a beautiful compilation. There were many parts that ended up working together to create beauty.
Barriers can be broken when we listen, when we celebrate difference, and when we know who we are. That does not mean that one is better than another, right? Right, none of that comparison game here. Psalm 139:14 I will praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully-made, your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
