Charlie Brown Moments for Mental Health

Charlie Brown. I’m thinking of Charlie Brown moments. I have lots of Charlie Brown moments. I picture him and his failures flying a kite or kicking a football. Yes, Lucy tripped him up on that last one. He trusted her to hold the ball or to help him. He put his trust in the wrong person and believed what she said about him. He walks around despondently, as I do sometimes, letting his thoughts of himself be the primary deciding factor of who he is and what success is.

I have moments of doubt in myself too, which drive me to be overly critical of me. And, the doubt also leads me to overly try or to try to please people, instead of God. Their comments or their criticisms of me (or my perceptions of what they might be saying about me), leave me anxious, worried, or down. I’m flat on my back, like Charlie Brown.

Today, my pastor talked about foundations, good foundations. My foundation is not from my efforts or from the esteem of other people. They represent shifting sands. My pastor explained the importance of foundation using Matthew 7:24-29. I include a portion of the scripture here: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.”

I don’t want to fall down like Charlie Brown, or like the house built on the sand. My foundation is on God’s word and what He says. My foundation is not this world or what people say. Per my pastor, “Scripture guards our heart against discouragement.” So, what words encourage you today? Mine comes from Psalm 139:14 For I will praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made, your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

My challenge to you today, dear teens, is to use scripture to build your foundation. What two verses will you write down and meditate on for one week? Tape it somewhere where you will see it daily (maybe more than once daily). Memorize it and put it in your heart as your foundation.
